I returned to the Bernabéu to attend the match between Real Madrid and Getafe. Los Blancos desperately needed the three points in the title race, but couldn’t get past Getafe’s defense. José Bordalás surprised everyone and secured all three points: 0-1.
Real Madrid played without star player Kylian Mbappé, who is sidelined with an injury for a few weeks. The home side wanted to win to reduce the gap to La Liga leaders Barcelona to just one point. Vinícius Júnior got the first big chance of the match. The Brazilian found himself one-on-one with David Soria, but failed to hit the target.
Shortly after, Arda Güler thought he had scored the opening goal. The midfielder beat a defender with a beautiful Zidane roulette before firing a shot from just inside the penalty area, but Getafe’s goalkeeper managed to tip it over the crossbar.
Real Madrid struggled to create chances and, out of nowhere, Getafe took the lead. After a long ball, Martín Satriano saw the ball drop at his feet. He didn’t hesitate for a second and volleyed it from the edge of the box straight into the top corner, giving Thibaut Courtois no chance: 0-1.
The second half started with Arbeloa’s team pushing harder and harder for the equalizer. It resulted in a few opportunities, but the really big chances never arrived. The fans at the Bernabéu were ready to celebrate when a header from Antonio Rüdiger narrowly went wide. Minutes later, a header from Rodrygo following a cross from Franco Mastantuono rolled just past the wrong side of the post.
Real Madrid’s evening became even worse towards the end. Franco Mastantuono reacted angrily to the referee and was shown a red card. Shortly after, Getafe player Adrián Liso also received a red card for kicking the ball away after the referee’s whistle. In the end, it made no difference to the final score. Real Madrid failed to create any major chances and lost at home.
Real Madrid will try to redeem themselves on Friday when they face Celta Vigo away from home. Getafe, meanwhile, will play against Real Betis on Sunday at their own stadium.
