Real Madrid triumphs in silence against Maccabi Tel Aviv

I was able to attend a really special basketball match. The game was played behind closed doors due to security concerns, but that did not stop Real Madrid Basketball from securing another EuroLeague victory, this time against Maccabi Tel Aviv: 98–86.

The match took place at the Movistar Arena and was declared “high risk” by the State Commission against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia, and Intolerance in Sport. Real Madrid followed the recommendation of the national police to play without fans and refunded everyone who had purchased a ticket.

Real Madrid started the match in sixth place in the EuroLeague, with twelve victories and eight losses. They were hoping to maintain their momentum after a win against Lyon-Villeurbanne (69–80) last Tuesday. Their opponents, meanwhile, were looking to bounce back after a defeat against Barcelona (93–83) on the same day. Maccabi Tel Aviv were sitting in 14th place, with eight wins in the competition.

The home side began the game aggressively and quickly opened a five-point gap within the first four minutes. Mario Hezonja led the way with nine early points. Maccabi Tel Aviv responded well, however, and a dominant second part of the first quarter resulted in a surprise lead for the visitors: 21–25.

The second quarter swung back and forth. In the final minutes, Real Madrid fought their way back into the game and regained the lead. Andrés Feliz stood out with three crucial three-pointers, allowing the home team to head into halftime with a narrow one-point advantage.

The tempo increased after the break, something the Israeli side could not fully match. Maccabi Tel Aviv missed several opportunities, while Real Madrid were far more efficient. The hosts extended their lead to 76–65 and entered the final quarter with confidence.

Real Madrid sealed the win in the last quarter. Maccabi Tel Aviv tried to fight back but were unable to close the gap anymore: 98–86. Mario Hezonja was the standout performer with sixteen points, followed by Facundo Campazzo with fifteen.

This Sunday, Real Madrid will look to continue their strong form when they face Andorra in the Liga ACB. Maccabi Tel Aviv will also be in action on the same day, taking on Hapoel Jerusalem in the Ligat HaAl.
