Real Madrid edge past Atlético in thrilling derby at the Bernabéu

After going to Madrid in September to watch a match at Atlético Madrid’s stadium, I got the chance to see Real Madrid and their rivals face each other again at the Bernabéu. In a spectacular match, Los Blancos secured a 3-2 victory.

Earlier in the day, FC Barcelona had beaten Rayo Vallecano, which increased the pressure on Real Madrid. They needed all three points against an Atlético side that was no longer fully focused on La Liga. Diego Simeone’s team had shifted their attention to the Copa del Rey and the Champions League. Still, every team wants to win a derby.

Both teams started the match strongly, and it was the home side that created the first big opportunity. Federico Valverde found himself free on the right side of the pitch, just like against Manchester City, but this time his shot hit the left post. Moments later, Marcos Llorente had a great chance at the other end, but his effort was saved by Andriy Lunin, who replaced the injured Thibaut Courtois in the starting lineup.

In the 33rd minute, Atlético took the lead. Ademola Lookman broke free in front of Lunin and calmly scored to make it 0-1. Real Madrid immediately tried to respond, but they had to wait until the second half to find the equalizer. The referee awarded a penalty, which Vinicius Júnior converted with ease. Just three minutes later, the home side had already turned the game around. Federico Valverde intercepted the ball and fired it past the goalkeeper into the far corner.

Real Madrid could not enjoy their lead for long. In the 66th minute, Atlético equalized in spectacular fashion. Nahuel Molina struck from long distance and found the top corner brilliantly. Both teams then pushed for a winner, and it eventually came for Los Blancos. Once again, it was Vinicius Júnior who found the net. The Brazilian cut inside and calmly placed the ball into the far corner to make it 3-2.

Not long afterwards, Federico Valverde was sent off after receiving a red card for a foul on Giuliano Simeone. It led to a chaotic ending, with Atlético desperately searching for an equalizer. Julián Álvarez came close, but he could not stop the three points from staying at the Bernabéu. With this victory, Real Madrid reduced the gap to Barcelona to just four points.
